View Full Version : Cream & Yoghurt Substitutes
:?: Does anyone know of a dairy free alternative to whipped cream? I've tried whipping Soya Dream but it doesn't thicken, even with added oil.
:?: I'm also looking for unsweetened yoghurt substitutes to use in savoury recipes and as dips etc. Most brands seem to be sweetened.
:D Just thought I'd let you know that I have found a good savoury yoghurt substitute. It is Sojasun, Live Soya Speciality, it comes in 250g tubs and can be found in the chiller cabinet in health food shops for around 79p. I thought the flavour was a little like Quark or cottage cheese and not particularly sour like normal plain yoghurt. It made a lovely yoghurt/mint dip for my indian starters last night (and hubby didn't even comment on it being 'that milk free rubbish' like he normally would so it must have been good).
:?: Still searching for a thick cream though.
Hi Pam,
If I ever find a whipped cream substitute I will let you know, as the only ones I know of are runny.
Kind Regards,
Lan. :D :D

I was told by my local health food store if you had some lemon juice to the Soya Dream it will thicken.
I have not actually tried this myself yet.
Do you just add a squeeze and stir it in or does it need whipping? I'll probably give that one a go, I've got loads of Soya Dream.

Apparently if you squeeze some in and whipp at the sametime until your get the right thickness.
I have not tried this myself yet.
I'll see if I get time tonight and will let you know. We must be online at the same time - that was a quick reply!
What pudd shall I make to go with it? I've got gooseberries and rhubarb in the freezer so it might have to be a crumble I think!
Well I'm afraid it wasn't too successful. I got a thick froth which didn't even thicken any more in the fridge like normal cream does. I suppose it was different enough to be interesting but it would be no good for a cake filling or on top of a trifle. It was a bit like the cream produced by one of those soda syphon creamers that froths up single cream using gas - it soon disapppears into liquid again.
On adding the second lot of lemon juice I did notice that the cream suddenly lifted so I think the juice did do something but adding more juice only affected the flavour and made the cream more runny if anything.
Oh well the rhubarb and strawberry crumble (made with Pure soya spread) was very nice but I'm rather full now. I might manage seconds for supper (or for breakfast tomorrow morning!)
