Well I had a little moan to tesco's online about the fact that becasue they don't pay for first couple of days sickness their staff come in to work sick. Then sneeze all over the food they are stacking or scanning without any way of cleaning their hands.
My point being that they could easily find themselves the centre of outbreaks of flu and so on.
Got a reply that they had told the local manager and that i should not see this again.

So, should you see anyone sneezing then stacking/scanning without cleaning complain. It may not be the staff members fault, though I was always taught to use tissue etc, but if we don't complain then it'll not improve.

I only raise this as due to our other problems we are often in a position of having low immunity and hence this could impact on us.

It doesn't bear thinking about that if they are lacking in basic habits like this, then what else do the staff not do hygeine wise?

Matt, you'll be following them to the toilet next to make sure they have washed their hands properly.

I take your point though, germs can very easily be spread in supermarkets. The air conditioning is a great transporter of germs alone from both staff and other customers.

Yes, their sickness policy stinks. Rob works in TESCO part-time and I could (BUT WON'T!!!) tell you some stories regarding basic hygiene there....
He had to call in once to say that our daughter - who has CHD - was in the hospital and he would be late...next day he had a "debriefing" with 2 managers about his "attitude" towards coming in to work!!!

Anyway Matt, next time you buy anything from your local bakery...make sure the staff got clean hands!!!!!! And what about door knobs etc. while you're out!!! Better pack some antibacterial wipes!!!
I've seen some horribly neglected hands and nails...hence we only buy organic and PACKED! (I can recommend the VILLAGE BAKERY!)

I've heard that Donald Trump is a germaphobe and will never shake anybody's hand!!!

Vanessa.

Hi Matt

I agree with you. I hate people who handle food with dirty hands. I to am fussy and when out have to look at the chef if possible. If they have been smoking, then that is a no no.

Hubby will walk out of a butchers shop if he sees them handling the pies/cooked meats after raw meat. We have a good butcher near us where all the staff have you waiting at the counter whilst they wash their hands if they have handled raw meat.

We once reported a restaurant where there were staff smoking in the kitchen.

Good for you Matt!

In supermarkets, who knows how many customers have already sneezed over the produce, or used dirty hands to handle things they then decide not to buy, but then we buy them! When watching TV Chef programmes, many times I have heard them say, 'don't wash mushrooms, just wipe them.' Yuk--mine get washed thoroughly (goodness knows what germs are on them). And think about how veggies probably don't get washed properly (if at all) in restaurants. I remember being given a salad (in Cambridge, watch out Claire!) that was covered in a sandy soil and had obviously never seen a drop of water.

I too am a bit fanatical about food hygiene and will always speak up if something is not right in a supermarket or restaurant. I had environmental health's phone number at hand and they got involved a few times. Once a Spar store was selling bread that IT HAD FROZEN (to keep it fresh), and then put it back on the shelf as fresh bread!! I also got one supermarket to use plastic gloves when slicing deli meat.

I've always maintained to my mum that salads were bad for you!! I'm fairly safe, I think I've only eaten a salad once, and that was only a nibble of lettuce leaves as I managed to persuade the staff to provide me with some bread instead!!

Its ridiculous that in food stores that staff aren't sent/ recieve proper hygiene training.

me cranky? as if!!!! now this is cranky, when picking stuff from the shelves i never take the one at the front...always the one a couple back from the front. ok the staff member who put it there could have sneezed over it but the last customer or their kids haven't!!! but then we all know i'm nuttier than a fruit cake!

i don't think it's asking too much for staff to clean their hands if they have a cold. i try to not think what else might be on their hands.
