My friend is celebrating a mile stone birthday and has invited us all to an Indian restaurant to help her celebrate. I've never been to one before as I don't particularly like hot food but on looking at a copy of the menu she obtained and I can see another reason I've never been - everything seems to contain dairy!
Can anyone recommend what I should order - bearing in mind I don't like anything too hot or spicy?
Thanks
Lyndsay
Maybe you could ring the restaurant beforehand to ask them if they have any milk free dishes. Our local takeaway will go through their menu and list the things that are dairy free if you ask them.
Most curries are made using ghee which traditionally is clarified butter, but I believe that some also use vegetable ghee which I imagine would be ok. You need to stay clear of korma and tikka/tikka masaala dishes as they usually contain cream or yoghurt but other curries may be ok. If you want a curry type dish maybe you could try bhuna, dopiaza, rogan josh or palak and ask for a really mild one. Chapattis should be ok and popadums are ok but naan bread is usually made with milk or yoghurt. Also avoid the yoghurt sauce that comes with starters though I think most starters should be ok - just avoid anything marinaded in yoghurt.
Most indian restaurants will do chicken and chips for the unadventurous so I'm sure you will find something to suit. Just make it clear to the staff that you cannot eat anything with milk in when you order.
Hi all,
I agree with Pam on this one, check before going to the restaurant. I know the Indian up my me will create me a dairy-free dish if asked.
The only thing is if you have an allergy then you have to watch the pans, as they will cook both dairy and non-dairy in them. Always be vigilant.
Hope the meal goes well, and your friend has a great night.
Kind Regards,
Lan. :D
