Does anybody know if LI brings unwanted and unexpected weight gain until the lactose is kept out from the diet?
It seems to me that I read something somewhere on the net, but I will only trust what you tell me.
Thank you
Victoria
Hi Victoria,
I have always been a well built girl and the only thing I noticed about being lactose intolerant, was that no matter how bad I was, I never lost weight. Maybe this is the reason I put on weight so easily.
Hope all the information given has been useful.

no idea but i can check the web if you want. i am the opposite and just don't eat enough hence seriously underweight!
could be eating comfort food to make feel better?:o
Yes, I have read that food intolerances can cause weight gain, but quite often if lactose intolerance causes sickness or diarrhoea then it will have the opposite effect and cause weight loss.
A lot of people have found that they lose weight when starting on a dairy free diet but that is probably a whole new eating regime when they are generally eating more healthily. I lost weight initially but put it back on when I discovered Green and Black chocolate and home baking dairy free style.

Same here Pam! I put on a lot of weight while I was being diagnosed, mainly because I mostly felt lethargic and dizzy so was at home for a long time on doctor's orders with nothing much to do but eat, which of course made things worse as I ate the wrong things!
I did lose weight for a while after going milk-free, but I've piled on a fair bit recently so really need to get on top of it.

I have had this discussion with my consultant, because I felt I was holding a lot of water. I now know that when I have any hidden lactose I hold water in my legs. It's because you are not digesting the lactose correctly it goes into your body as a 'poison' Causing water retension and all the other symptoms. Also I found that before I went on a dairy free diet I was always hungry even after a big meal I still wanted cakes, sweets etc all which were full of lactose. Apparently this has been a common symptom among most paitents, your body seems to gets addicted to lactose when you can't digest it and you crave even more, hence more weight gain. Something to do with the sugar balances and digestion in the body.
I found I lost weight when I first became dairy free. But have put on a bit of weight over christmas with all the chocolate brownies.

Well, I've been dairy and wheat free for over 6 weeks now and I haven't lost an ounce (although I could do with losing plenty!) I didn't specifically give up diary and wheat to lose weight - but I was expecting to lose some! Also haven't felt much better yet, so getting a bit disillusioned with the whole thing. I had a minor episode this morning and ate 3 pieces of shortbread whilst feeling sorry for myself. I'm finding dairy free easier to cope with than wheat free, but just wish that I had some positive changes to keep me on track.

Eden (who is 2) lost quite a bit of weight with it last Easter - that was before she became allergic to all dairy. Mind you, she had diarrhea with it, and lots of it.
Since going dairy-free, she hasn't gained an ounce.
Vanessa.
I can't say I noticed a weight change when I gave up dairy (but then I was training 11 times a week), but I wasn't having the bloating etc....
I also became less lethergic, when I gave up dairy.
However, I have managed to lose about 5 kilos in the months I've been ill!! (lack of exercise, means I've lost loads of muscle :( )

I am underweight like Matt probably because I am so restricted and just dont eat enough but I do try. It is hard to replace the fats I used to get from milk but probably would have lost the weight anyway because of the IBS symptoms. I have read somewhere that intolerences can cause weight gain although this maybe because you often crave the foods you are intolerent too which is a widely held belief.
just removing the dairy and wheat will not guarentee weight loss. especially over xmas!!
you need to look at you whole lifestyle and see how much you are burning off against what you eat.
some conditions do make you more prone to weight gain or retention but ultimately, it has to be more exercise and less food.:(
good luck

Yes - I know I have other weight issues - obviously I eat and drink too much and don't exercise enough - but it seems quite extraordinary that by cutting out so much starch and fat that there isn't even the smallest weight loss. After about 20 years of worrying about my weight (even when, 20 years ago I wasn't overweight!), I guess I have now become blind to the screamingly obvious and would rather go down a lot of distracting paths rather than face up to the fact that I actually need to control my eating. My name is Elaine and I am a foodaholic. There. I feel better now ......
Shortbread, anyone??
Gloriana - that's been my experience! I thought I was eating healthily because I was non-dairy and had been for years. When I tried to lose weight (and consequently had to learn about calories and portion sizes) I got a shock - all the 'healthy' stuff I had been eating was either not very or I'd been eating much too much of it. I'm afraid that its entirely possible to gain weight on a dairy-free diet, but equally its entirely possible to lose weight. I've done that successfully (and kept it off). If you want to private message me I have a few non-dairy low calorie recipes.

never meant to nag!!!:lol2:
the going dairy free ca n be a trigger to going healthy. cut out proceesed stuff and make from fresh, loads of vegies and so on. easier to avoid hidden dairy and better for you!:)
good luck.
