I was diagnosed as being dairy intolerant the week before christmas along with being mildly wheat intolerant. I am slowly getting into the habit of reading labels on food and feel quite alone. My mum (who's exceptionally great) found me this website. Any advice on foods is welcome.:o

Hi Vicky 99 and welcome to the site.

What a time to be diagnosed with dairy intolerance. Any questions you have are more than welcome and everyone here is friendly and helpful.

My advice would be to get to the nearest Holland and Barrett as they will be able to advise you on foods and then it's just test them and see which you prefer. Below are some of the ones I enjoy.

Cheeses

Parmasano - This is the dairyfree equivalant to powdered cheese. it's very nice on bolognese and pasta. Available in Sainsbury's, Tescos and Holland and Barrett.

Cheezly - It comes in many different versions such as mozarella, nacho flavour and also a melting variety, which is lovely melted on toast. Available in Tescos and Holland and Barrett.

Milk

I use the Alpro Soya brand and find it nicer than the cheaper varieties that seem to contain high amounts of sugar. Never did have a sweet tooth!! Available in Sainsbury's, Tescos and Holland and Barrett. They also do a chocolate variety.

I know Holland and Barrett sell milkshakes in banana, strawberry and chocolate varieties as well. Unsure of the exact name of them and will have to check.

Ice-Cream

I stick with Swedish Glaze which comes in loads of flavours and are nicer than dairy ice-creams. Available in Sainsbury's (I think), Tescos and Holland and Barrett.

Cream

There is a dairy free cream available and again am unsure of the manufacturer. I will check and get back to you on that one. Available in Tescos (by the long life milks) and Holland and Barrett.

Yoghurts

I eat Alpro Soya, but there are many more on the market. Available in Sainsbury's, Tescos and Holland and Barrett.

Chocolate

I eat the dairy free milk chocolate bar available from Sainsburys and their own make. It is available plain or nutty.

I hope this is helpful and I'm sure others will post after me with other suggestions. My only advice is too keep checking the labels and checking out the list of milk names on the site, as there are many different ones. There is also more help out there now then when I was first diagnosed (which took 3 years).

If I can help with anything else let me know.

Good luck,

Lan.

Hi Vicky.

The soya cream is a replacement for single cream. It is called Alpro soya dairy free alternative to single cream.

Cheese - I personally like Scheese but not the cheddar version. I find this in my local health food shop. I have it in sandwiches. Cheezly super melting is very good on toast - I have only tried the Mozzarella style. Again this comes from the local health food shop but I think I have seen it in Holland & Barrett too.

Chocolate - I really like the taste of Tesco plain organic chocolate.

We don't have to starve although it seems like it when you first start.

Hi and welcome to the site.

I personally use Tofutti Mozzarella slices. Don't taste too bad, and melt, so are practical for things like toasted sandwiches, and on jacket potatoes.

For chocolate I eat Lindt Dark chocolate or Green and Blacks, (I've only ever had the normal dark chocolate) and sometimes Tescos finest dark chocolate. And on occassions I will also eat the Divine Dark Chocolate, (the problem with this is that I can eat a full bar in one go....)

I also use Alpro Soya milk, the fresh one, not the UHT, but I also quite happily drink the unsweetned UHT one as well.

Hope this is of some use to you.

Hiya Lan,

Can't thank you enough for the advice, I popped into Holland and Barrett and a shop called Mother Nature. Under their advice I now have a load of tasty treats!

Hello Claire,

I am yet to try the tofutti mozzarella slices, any ideas on where I can buy some? I have tried the Alpro Soya milk and the fresh one is good on porridge.

Many thanks for the good advice.

Hiya Matt,

As advised I have entered the realm of the unknown to my local health shop, it's called Mother Nature and I am slowly learning what's good.

Anything in particular you want to know about me? I'm more than happy to supply information because I am exceptionally nosy too!!

Welcome back. I get my Tofutti slices from Holland and Baratts. I used to get them from a health food shop around here, but its too far for me to travel.
Your local health food shop should be able to help you.

We just like to know more about people!! Lots of responses on here, is a good distraction for me:)

Hi there.

I had a thing for the gym until the beginning of January when couldn't get in. Now I go for an hour long walk (mostly up hills) each night and really enjoy. I do it on my own come rain or shine and carry a personal alarm. (Just in case)

Oh well....

I'm very bitter about exercise at the moment, however I was never a fan of the gym, much preferred being out and about- primarily on a river!!
Matt, be nice to Lan!!

You tell him Claire. He always seems to be picking on me.

As for you Matt, I'll decide on the punishment later.

I actually carry an alarm as part of the walk is quite lonley and to warn the sheep that I am racing up there. Would hate to knock any over. Have to have a laugh, I guess.

Take care all.

Lan.

Hi Lan,

I remember doing an outward bound course in Wales, those hills are mighty steep. I ended up with massive calve muscles!!!

Definitely good for you for keeping active, i love the gym and have a personal trainer once a week. Oh the things we women go to to be slim.

Still no pain no gain, ...........right?
