Thanks for all the concern you've shown, thought I'd leave a short message to put people's minds at rest as I've not been around. I'm in hospital (on rip-off Patientline unit), had gallbladder out as got very ill. Actual surgery went OK, but all got unpleasant afterwards as my blood oxygen and pressure had major problems resulting in a transfer to the High Dependency Unit until I was stabilised yesterday. Recovering in ward 106 of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary now, hoping to get out on good behaviour soon! Return key not working so I'll sign off now. Hope everyone's well and happy. xxx

Lets hope that now you can really recover after a few months of hell. Hope they are looking after you well in the hospital and that you don't have to stay there for too long.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Get well soon Gill. Hope you can get home soon and relax in your own bed. That always seems to make you feel better.

Get well soon Gill. The little blighter is out now...I suspect the weight loss hasnt been an advantage as being as poorly as you have been probably means you lost too much anyway. Thinking of you a lot, I would tell you to rest but think you are like me so you probably cant relax when there is always so much to get on with so instead I will say use the enforced break to read some books you have always been meaning to get around too and you are officially allowed to read trashy magazines and watch truly dreadful daytime TV and get some great DVDs/videos to watch.

Well here's hoping you make a good and speedy recovery Gill! Sounds like you had a pretty rough time of it but now they've whipped out the sucker maybe you'll be ok now - here's hoping! Take it easy and:

[cliché]get well soon[/cliché].

Thanks everyone, you're all sweethearts and I'm really touched by your concern and compassion. :)

Well, I'm home at last. I'm still in a fair amount of pain, but it's more bearable now and I really wanted to sleep in my own bed. It took SEVEN HOURS to discharge me because they had to do some legal shenanigans in order to provide me with controlled narcotic substances, so don't expect much sense out of me for the next few days. Actually, come to think of it, you never get much sense out of me anyway.

The surgery went fairly well and they managed to do it with keyhole surgery so my final recovery time should be shorter. The pain from the operation was much worse than expected, mostly due to the fact that it was compounded by the recent damage to my pancreas, and I got quite ill in the recovery room with respiratory depression - hence the move to the High Dependency Unit for oxygen therapy and serious observation. It's very boring in that place, wouldn't recommend it. Hard to sleep when everyone around you is crashing or screaming, too!

Anyway...

It's really good to be home. Given that my pancreas will hopefully now make a full recovery, it probably won't stop me eating dairy products - but I experienced such a dramatic improvement in my long-running digestive symptoms by avoiding milk that I'll probably stay pretty much dairy-free regardless. I may have a little cheese on special occasions and so on, but I'm going to stick to my soya milk and other dairy-free products.

If I eat dairy sometimes, does that mean I get kicked out of the DairyfreeUK door and told never to come back?? *cry*

Glad to be back, folks. :lol2:

Gill (minus one dodgy internal organ) xx

I'm sure you can come back- just don't expect any sympathy when the dairy makes you feel funny:p Please don't leave us all here!!

Great to hear that you are home. Of course we won't disown you if you eat dairy now and again, we will just be jealous :).

We would all be thrilled to hear that your pancreas heals itself and you end up able to eat whatever you like. I don't think any of us suffer with our intolerances as much as you have with your problem.

said it on other thread and will say it again.

take it easy. take your time to recover. look to the long term not short term frustration of being immobile.

i'm sure we'll let you stay even if you eat dairy. we'll just talk about you behind your back!!!:lol2:

feel better soon. or atleast feel stoned enough to not care.

Nice to see you back again Gill, I hope your recovery is quick and uncomplicated.

I've been sneaking the dairy in over christmas but I'm paying for it with sinus/mucus problems so I know that I'm better off without - I just have no willpower! We can be the naughty ones hiding behind the bikesheds together.

We can be the naughty ones hiding behind the bikesheds together.Tee hee. I have an image of us sneaking bits of cheesecake in and looking terribly naughty. I'm trying not to imagine us in school uniforms though... :lol2:

Woke up incredibly sore this morning, one hour before I was due my next long-release dose of painkiller. Feeling much better now as it's started to kick in. Talking of painkillers....I found out that the main one I'm on (oxycodone) is known on the street as 'Hillbilly Heroin'. What fun!

They've got me on two different types - twice a day I take a larger dose of sustained-release to keep the pain levels dampened, then I can take smaller doses of a fast-release type whenever I need it (up to once an hour) when the pain peaks and gets nasty. I'm not stupid enough to think I can be pain-free after such an unpleasant time, but the combination - with some extra ibuprofen and paracetamol thrown in to support it - seems to keep things bearable. However, it also keeps me unable to concentrate, sleepy and stoned out of my head.

Can't wait until I'm better, in a more stable and long-term job, and generally happier. It's been a bit of a rough ride recently! All the support I've been receiving on here really helps though, so thanks to everyone who's sent me good thoughts and messages. Claire (cnc) sent me a card and UBERCUTE little teddy bear through the post - for the record, his fur looks a far brighter colour when I'm out of my head. :D

Sorry for boring everyone senseless, but I'm stuck at home and trying to take my mind off the fact that being ill has probably ruined my chances of getting through my probation period at work...

Gill

So glad to hear you are back home. There is no way your serious illness should affect your probation period which should just be extended, the fact that you remained so comitted throughout this should show in your favour not against it.

Copper

Yes I agree with everything Rebecca said on the subject of probation.

Anyway now that you been "mended" you shouldn't need any more time off sick, once you have got over this op obviously.

:naughty:

The sickness really shouldn't count against you (I think that may be illegal, not sure) especially as you had to have surgery for it - it's not as though you pulled a sicky after telling everyone you were going out for a major drinking session! If they do then they're idiots as you're obviously very committed.

Don't worry about it Gill, just take your hillbilly heroin and let the spotted purple elephants entertain you. ;)

there's people that pay to be as stoned as you:lol2:

good to hear all is going well. keep spamming away.
if they are stupid enought to ditch you due to this then that's their loss not yours.

just concentrate on getting better.

or is it just the whisky talking? you're my best mate you are....:lol2: :lol2:I wish it was! I have a bottle of Royal Lochagar Selected Reserve here, unopened, waiting for the time I can drink alcohol again!

So...no. And Claire's a Great Big Fibber, incidentally. :p

Mornings are proving INCREDIBLY rough on me. I think it's a result of having had very little pain relief through the night, but I wake in absolute agony, feeling like my insides are being ripped out (again). I can't breathe, can't move...it's really very unpleasant. Then, as the day wears on and the painkillers hit a fairly stable level in my bloodstream, I'm more able to do stuff. Means I go to bed every night DREADING the morning. Sigh.

That's my complain for today. Sorry for venting!

You know...Claire has this thing where she refuses to contemplate the fact that she's actually very sweet. I think we should all tell her so, until she backs down. :lol2:

The things this women says about me!! First she accuses me of being nice, and now I'm a liar- Good job I know plenty of lawyers (well student lawyers at any rate!!)

That's my complain for today. Sorry for venting!
Awww I hope you feel better soon. Can they not give you drugs to last over night??

Gah and now I'm being accused of being sweet!! I shall still put all of this down to the drugs, I have never been known to be sweet or nice!!
Gill you have no proof whatsoever that I'm sweet, or any of these things you accuse me off :D I think I'm being picked on :p

Gill I know this sounds mad but why can't you spread your pain relief evenly through 24 hours? This would mean setting the alarm for silly o'clock in order to take the tablets. I am sure that Matt would love this idea too :o

matt
23-01-2006, 04:34 AM
i have to say i was going to sugeest the exact same as copper. set the alarm and take soemthing half way through the night. it's got to be better than waking up in agony? worth a try i would say.

it will get better soon i hope. then crack open that bottle and have a dram for me.:D

I'm really a lot better now, though having a few post-op digestive problems! I'm still very tired and achey, but as the doc said, it'll take a few months for everything to heal properly and for me to be 100% again. Being back at work is proving difficult as I can't just sleep when the fatigue hits me...

However...yes! I DID treat myself to the TINIEST sip of Royal Lochnagar when we had friends around a few days ago, with no apparent ill effects. Admittedly I probably had about a quarter of a shot, but still, it was lovely :) In general, though, I'm still avoiding alcohol, dairy and too much fat.

Much sympathy for this. I'm off back to bed very shortly, feeling dire.

A little of what you fancy and all that....

Hope you keep making a recovery and look after yourself.
