A guy on The DVD Forums came up with the idea that by the end of 2006 he wanted to have watched all of the top 100 films on the imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com/chart/top) website. I think this is a pretty good idea as the ratings there are user generated and a film really does have to be good to get into the list, so I'm going to do the same thing. Not sure if I'll be able to get all of them but I'm going to have a good shot at it - I've 28 films to go. Here's a list of the top 100 at the moment, which is the list I'll be following. I've marked in bold the films I've not yet seen. I've watched two so far this year, Downfall and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, and I've got quite a few of the others on dvd that I haven't yet watched, plus some I've recorded from TV. There are some films I've marked as unwatched that I'm fairly sure I've seen (the Chaplins and Wizard of Oz for example) but I've put them on as I'm not completely sure.

Watched this year so far:

46. Downfall (14th Jan)
11. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (15th Jan)
53. Million Dollar Baby (20th Jan)
91. The Wizard Of Oz (22nd Jan)
31. Sunset Boulevard (22nd Jan)
83. Rebecca (26th Jan)
73. Life Is Beautiful (31st Jan)

A friend of mine wanted to know where Hot Shots and Airplane were! :D

Just watched Million Dollar Baby. I'm not quite sure what I expected it to be like but it was totally gripping and the second half was absolutely heart-breaking!

There are plenty of other very good films around!! Not sure I've ever seen Airplane, but seen Hot Shots and part deux, and other similar films. Plus lots of comedies.

Saw Hitch the other day, was quite entertained by that film.- Sorry that was just a random thought I had!!

anything of this nature is very subjective, and any list made up of peoples favourites tends to be very skewed to what they have seen in the recent past.!
yeah there's some good stuff in that list and i've seen most of them but there's other stuff missing out and some that i'd not consider top 100 stuff.

aliens??? no alien... yes one a superb thriller (apart from the stupid exploding from stomach toy!! great reaction from the cast though as they had no idea what was going to happen so all real!!) the other while a good film is a shoot em up!

i could go on...:o

It is all subjective, but I've found the imdb list to be a pretty good indicator of film quality as it's based on cumulative scores from regular reviewers and you can see how many votes each film has had and it's overall score (The Godfather has had over 150,000 votes). There are about 18 films in the list from the last 6 years, but they're all ones that have been very highly acclaimed so it does seem that the flavour of the month doesn't just leap into the list. I certainly give imdb.com more credance than the channel 4 lists. ;)

It's just a bit of fun really and all I've done it for is to give me something to aim for. It's already got me to see three films I really, really enjoyed watching, so I think there's some merit to it.

Matt - I don't think every film on the list has to be a Seventh Seal or Citizen Kane style film, Alien was a landmark film and Aliens, while just an action film, was superbly made. I really, really didn't like The Sting when I watched it, but I'm not too concerned about it being in the list as it was probably just not my kind of film.

i know it's just a bit of fun and didn't mean to offer criticism of you for seeing them all!! honest:o

what is really needed is a programme to analyse the films that you most liked and then print a list of 100 films that you'd like to watch. save you watching any arthouse films that are wonderfull cinematography but shite in plot!:lol2:

now that is a programme i'd use.

meantime i'll just try to discern from critics. planning to see jathead as i think the sense of humour will appeal.

Jathead!?! I'm hoping you mean Jarhead :D Otherwise you might have a lot of problems attempting to see Jathead :)

Watched Wayne's World yesterday, has been a long time since I've seen that!!

I didn't mean it in any self-righteous type-fashion matt, that posting should have come across as casual but maybe it didn't - I wasn't taking a pop at you.

A friend of mine is a member of screenselect, which does dvd rental by post. They've got a lot of the films I want to see from my list so may join up myself at some point. I've got quite a few of the films already so I'll leave doing that until later in the year.

Hope you enjoy Jarhead - I wouldn't mind seeing that but I don't really go to the cinema any more because of the cost and the poor experience (poor projector setups, too loud, unruly punters and bad seats). I knocked my coccyx when I was a kid and can get discomfort if I have to sit in one position in poor chairs and cinema seats get me wriggling around before the end, so I just go for really big films. That means I've only seen Lord of the Rings and Star Wars at the flicks recently. I prefer watching dvds at home though - better sound and picture (though smaller), cheaper food and drink, more comfortable chairs, better company and I don't miss a thing when I need to go out to the toilet.

don't worry no offence taken or meant. we're far too easy going to upset each other on this site, i hope.

i'm 6'7" so cinema not very comfortable, the psycho probs mean no good in crowds!! but some films are better with decent size screen and surround sound, which i can't do at home without upsetting lots of neighbours!
can go to the early show at cinema in southampton before 12. costs about £3 and is usually fairly empty.

i joined the tesco dvd rental. the only trouble being they don't seem to send out any of the up to date ones. i have been waiting for war of the worrlds since beginning of december, they do send out regularly and quickly just not new stuff.
just had bill bailey part troll and the bewilderness dvds.

think i'll stick to using my tesco vouchers to get blockbuster tokens.

not that i watch much.

Fozzybear

Didn't know that tesco did rentals too - but I haven't rented a movie for years.

Just watched The Wizard of Oz, which was pretty good although the good witch and the munchkins were really cringe-worthy! I'm glad I watched it though, it's one of those classic films that's really well known but seemingly not actually watched by many people!

It's a Wonderful Life is at number 30 - a cracking film!

Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my faves too, as is Kelly's Heroes!

Watched Sunset Boulevard last night so that's five off the list so far this year and we're still in January!

Not a great film watcher myself, it's hard to get a slot when hubby and Megan aren't watching a film! I love all the Disney ones of Megan's. We watched 102 Dalmatians yesterday - really good.

I agree with Pam 'Where's 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Top Gun'?':o

I have to be in the right mood to watch a film. I also tend to fall asleep during them, so have to choose carefully when to watch!!
DVD evening on Friday, I think it may be time for some disney films (well it will be Friday, we can't watch anything too complicated!!)

Was in Tescos the other day and ended up purchasing 4 dvds....
I mostly wanted Girl with a Pearl Earring, but it came in a set of three. Other two were Dear Frankie, and In America. Neither of which I've ever heard of. But 3 dvds for a mammoth £7.83 can't be bad :D
Then I bought 50 First Dates-I'm a bit of a sucker for silly romantic comedies!! But again that was the princely sum of £4.96. So 4 dvds for £12.79, can't complain really, even if they're rubbish :D

Oh and for anyone who has kids, they had a load of dvds for 97p each, which seemed to be cartoony based.
