View Full Version : Portuguese
Hi,
No one happens to speak Portuguese at all do they??
I've a field trip to the Algarve to go on, and need to be able to tell people about my dairy problems. I know there are the cards you can buy, but I'm only going for a one off and I'm a student- so could do without the extra expense!!
Any help greatly appreciated
by the power of google try this site
http://www.worldlingo.com/en/products_services/worldlingo_translator.html
can type in phrases and it'll translate for you.:)
Have tried several of those sites, and they have come up with several different versions of the phrase, which added to my confusion!!
Plus the one you directed me to only translates to Portuguese Brazillian, which probably won't be accurate for Portugal itself. Thanks for the help though.

Studied Spanish a long time a go and tend to adapt this a bit when I go to Portugal. In Spanish as far as I remember san Or sin is without con is with and leche is milk, the Portuguese will probably be similar although you'll also need to know butter. Most waiting staff in the Algarve speak English, they often serve great grilled seafood so it should not be a problem accomodating dairy free. You may get sick of chips as they come with everything.
Thanks for the advice Rebecca. I'm used to eating chips with everything, not that I actually like chips but going away as a kid, I was a faddy eater, and so nearly all my meals ended up coming with chips!!
Looks like I might have to learn to eat seafood- not something I've ever particularly fancied though
calamari is nice if cooked right! sardines fresh from the boats. what more could you want?:)

I went to Italy last year and bought a small dictionary with a few phrases at the back, one of which was 'I am allergic to'. I used this to make my own card up with all the correct food words, also in the dictionary, and when I got there I asked the english speaking receptionist if it was clear to understand.
Good luck!:)
What you mean you aren't going to use the standard english approach to johnny foreigner?
Speak loudly and slowly and they will understand you unless they are deaf.... i mean it's english. everyone understands that don't they???:lol2:

Quick thought - if you're a student presumably there will be a language centre at your college or uni, could you post on a forum or ask around to get someone to give you 5 mins help? Or there might be a society you could approach.
Thanks for the idea, but its all become a bit irrelevant as I was declared medically unfit to go on the trip!!
I looked at the language centre, but Portuguese, isn't a very popular language, so not many people learn it.

When were you told you couldn't go? :( Will they still allow you to go to Madagascar? Will not going to Portugal affect your degree? So many questions - sorry.
Ah sorry, I thought I'd explained this before- this was related to me nearly quitting a few weeks ago. After they'd taken me on the field trip and I'd ended up on the coach all day, the undergraduate office, suddenly realised that I still wasn't well, and I got an email from my tutor asking me to prove I was well enough, quite a rude and abrasive email actually. So I had to get an emergency appointment to see a GP who said no, it wasn't sensible. I was very angry with my tutor over this as when I spoke to the lady from the office, she told me that my tutor was meant to be keeping her updated about my situation (this would be my tutor who thinks I'm depressed and not physically ill), and had neglected to tell them I was still unwell, which is not surprising really as he doesn't believe I'm ill!! There are various other things related to this going on, but this was part of the reason I nearly quit, as I just couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Oh and it wasn't me just being unorganised, I'd asked in week 1 of this term, I raised my concerns with my tutor about me going, and when I went back a fortnight later, I got told that it was tough luck and I was going to have to cope!! (I'm changing tutor....)
I am going to Madagascar, no one is going to stop me. Department need assurance that I'm well enough to go, and that is what they will have- my Dr knows my intentions, he doesn't seem to keen on me going, but I will get my way, and I promised to behave myself whilst I'm out there and take lots of rest!! Think I deserve it to be honest :)
Not going to Portugal means that the coursework I was meant to do whilst out there will be replaced with a piece of data analysis to do instead.
Think that answers all of your questions :)

Sorry - I bet you think I am nosey but I am just concerned. I was going to suggest changing tutor then read that you intend to do just that. I thought that this attitude had gone out with the change of name from "yuppy flu".
Keep battling on you will get there. You just have to know when you need a rest.
No no its fine, I forgot I'd never explained why I was in such a state. I went to see the senior tutor, as my tutor has upset me 3 times this term (these are meant to be the people who are there to support you)- He told me that the Disability Resources Centre wouldn't be able to help me at all. However, due to them I've just been assessed for a Disabled Students Allowance, to get lots of equipment to help me. He is offically as much use as a chocolate fireguard!!
This is part of the reason I'm so determined to go to Madagascar :)

You certainly deserve to go claire, but will you take your own advice and take things easy and get plenty rest,
Your doctor is maybe not wanting you to go for your own health, but i guess your the only one who know's wether you are capable or not.
either way, make sure you get the rest you are talking about, and more importantly, ENJOY YOURSELF.:D

Unfortunately there is still widespread misunderstanding of this chronic illness. :soapbox: If I were an employer/tutor and had responsibilty for someone with a specific illness/condition I would make sure I found out about it, unfortunately, I know only too well that this is not the case. When I did attempt a graded return to work, the headteacher put me in one of the only 2 classes in the whole school where you had 2 flights of steps to climb several times a day, when I asked her if it was possible not to do this she asked why?...... :headbang: People have absolutely no idea!!!! I have one wish, and it's rather cruel, if only everyone who is horrible to us sufferers could get this damn illness, just for a short while, they would surely be nicer people.
Moan over....sorry!
I guess your the only one who know's wether you are capable or not.
It's more a case of planning to go to Madagascar is about the only thing holding me together, its going to be a working holiday, so should be ok.
Yes, Lou unfortunatly suffers many of my rants. I get it from tutors, and other people who think they know what they're on about- the best one was someone said to me that they'd accompany me to the doctors and then I could walk around as much by myself the rest of the day. They seemed to not be able to understand the fact that I'm limited to 15 minutes physical activity a day, and that I'm safe enough to be let out on my own for those 15 minutes!!This was the same guy who told me that disabled people shouldn't be given any allowances "if dyslexic people are stupid then they should be penalised for it" I was told all this the same day I had to deal with my tutor. Any wonder I wanted to quit?! Rant over, sorry!!

omg u poor thing, that's totally unfair.
i think you should talk to welfare within ur union and tell them what's happened. they are on dodgy ground treating you like that.
I spoke to both the welfare officer and the disabilities officer about it all. They were furious!! I've taken the steps I can which involve going to see my senior tutor and explaining the situation to them (they weren't even aware that I had problems, which I'm fairly sure my own tutor should have told them about!!) and they're going to speak to my current tutor and explain to them why I want to move.
I'm going to see my tutor on Friday, and I've just placed a 14 page document in his pigeon hole detailing the needs assessment I had recently. Should be entertaining to see his response to that :D I wrote him a lovely note to go with the assessment. (I'm not normally this militant honestly!!, just angry at the fact that I have been told by 5 different GPs that I have PVFS that actually includes a consultant neurologist, and yet my tutor still things I'm not physically ill.) He's also absolutely convinced I'm depressed, which according to the doctors I'm not and that there is nothing physically wrong with me
Sorry I promised to stop ranting last time!! Please forgive me :)

You poor thing. It's not easy not being understood. No-one really 'gets' IBS either, but tutors etc should go out of their way to understand.
I think you're doing the right thing in trying to get through to them, so keep going with the militancy and let us know how you get on.

Trying to get my work done is my main problem at the moment :lol2:
Oh well pretty much done for the term now, just my two practicals, plus the coursework to replace my field trip coursework and then, next term....EXAMS :(
Oh and to put this thread back to its vague title- Anyone know the French for No dairy? I'm quite tempted to buy one of the cards, due to the length of time I shall be away for :)
Thanks for the dance PinkyPrincess :)

A couple of online translators have this "aucune laiterie ". I have no idea if this is correct. Somebody here is a translator (Eden's mum - Vanessa, I think) maybe they will be able to help.

well "lait" is milk and I'm pretty sure "sans" is without, so I would say "sans lait" but thats from my distant memory of french o'level and probably oisn't gramatically correct!!!! I think it is Vanessa who's a trnaslator.
Lou xx
I need to learn some more French, I learnt German in school- possibly one of the least useful languages to learn, as there isn't many German speaking countries around!!
I have a teach yourself French kit in my room, so shall be starting with that soon as well.

I thought about sans lait but that would be just no milk and Claire needs no dairy. She could of course have a long phrase where everything connected with milk is mentioned eg whey, butter etc :D

oh my thats all we need, it's bad enough learning English, Welsh without claire learning French.:lol2:
I have learnt French before, unfortunatly it was in 1998/1999 (strange school system as I learnt German from 1997, but then was educated into two languages for the following two years!!)
