I have just become lacto intolerant and I am in hell, all the things I love I can not longer eat and as I am the only onein my family like it I feel very alone. :(
I live in Cornwall and have gone round my local shops to try and find dairy free products, I have found a few but what I can't find is any cheese can any one help me.
Adele
Hi Adele,
I totally sympathise with you as I have had to cut out all dairy as well.
There are many cheeses available and my favourite at present is:
Hard Cheese - Available at Tescos and Health Food Shops
Soft Cheese - Available from Sainsburys 'Free From' Range
I hope this is helpful.
Please also check out all the links on the websites especially suppliers, as they should sell some sort of cheese.
I to am the only one in my family and the area I live in (that i know of), and I certainly know how hard it can be. Keep going and my thoughts are with you. Trust me when I say it is hard giving up the foods, but more healthy in the long run (less illness). I have been dairy, caffeine and citrus free for seven years, and would not change a thing as this experience has made me a stronger person. I hope you can use this as a positive experience when you have adjusted. Stay positive.
Good luck and if you ever want to talk, please do not hesitate to send me a private e-mail.
Kind Regards,
Lan.

Hi Adele
You have made a good start by finding this web site. :D Lots of useful info and lots of people to share your problems with. I've been completely dairy free for about 8 months. It can be hard giving up the food you love, but when like me you have suffered for about 15 years not knowing what the problem is it is such a relief to know that you can control your symptoms through the food you eat. I'm not saying it is easy, but try not to get too down :( (easier said than done) remember to keep the positive thinking or else it can grind you down. I used to love cheese but in time hopefully you will be able to find alternatives, or decide not to bother - I don't miss it too much any more. I used to eat a lot of chocolate and yoghurts but their are some good soya alternatives around. :P
Take Care

Hi Adele
You have my sympathy. I live in Dorset and it seems as though not many dairy free products are delivered to the south. I was lucky that Sainsburys fairly close to me had some dairy free products but then they stopped all the ones that I liked :(
Sainsburys do sell their own brand soft cheese in the Free From Range - I thiught it was horrible but others like it. You just have to try it. I like Tofutti soft cheese which I have now discovered in a small health food shop near me.
Hard cheese is harder to find. I have not found one I really like - I guess there is no substitute for the real thing. I have found some in the same small health food shop. I am currently eating some rice slices (Galaxy Nutritional Foods). They are a bit like the Kraft slices (plastic cheese :) )
My dairy intake is very small now and has been for about two years. My daughter eats cheese and I still miss it. I am not tempted to be naughty as I know I will suffer horribly afterwards.
