Jemima is 6 months next week, can I then give her soya milk & yoghurts?

She has a milk/lactose intolerance.

Alpro do a "no bits" smooth yoghurt which would probably be ok from 6 months and the sojasun ones are smooth too. They are quite expensive so I would put half into another sealable container to avoid wastage.

Don't overdo the soya, you don't want to start another intolerance off, but you should be ok with soya milk in cooking from now on. Double check with your health visitor though as it is a few years since I did weaning.

Soya yoghurts and milk is okay from 6 months, the alpro smooth yoghurts are called OY and I think they're raspberry and vanilla flavour.

I've only seen this thread now, sorry.

Soya milk is not suitable for babies under 12 months BECAUSE it's calcium & vitamin levels are insufficiently low for a baby that age -any dietitian will tell you that. if you choose to use shop-bought soya milk NOW, at 6 months, you will have to add a Calcium supplement at least. I wouldn't do it unless your child completely refuses a hypoallergenic formula at this age.
Also, as Pam said, the risk of yet another allergy might be lurking just around the corner.
However, if you decide to give soya milk now, don't do it without your dietitian's advice.
OSTEOCARE (£ 4.65) is the supplement we use. It is suitable for babies, too.

Vanessa.

Thanks for that. I only wanted to use soya in her cereal and as a yoghurt not as her main drink at all.

Hi, I buy the Alpro milk with added calcium and vitamins, the yoghurts also have added calcium. We saw the dietician when Zac was 7 months, at this point I was still breastfeeding for milk feeds, but using nutramigen for cereals etc. the dietician advised me that zacs diet was good enough and I didn't need to use the formula for cereals and that supermarket bought soya milk was fine. Soya is fine from 6 months onwards.
If you are using formula for feeds then it should be okay to use "normal" milk alternatives for cooking, cereals etc. but I would the ones with added calcium for that extra reassurance. You can also get rice milk with added calcium.
The problem with supplements is that several nutrients compete for absorption (e.g. calcium and magnesium) so by supplementing one you can actually cause a deficiency in another.

Soya "milk" isn't recomended as a subsitute for milk for children under the age of 2 years old. Our son Mac was weaned off Infasoy about 8 months and went onto Provamel, a shop bought "milk" after discussing the calcium content with a dietitian. Mac can't have anything containing lactose which comes from dairy, and is also used as a flavouring in lots of foods. Mac also started to have soya yogurts and Alpro deserts about 4 months old. It is possible to give children under 1 year old all soya milk and deserts. I have living proof here!!

Just wanted to point out that Holland and Barrett have a special on their Alpro Junior yogarts, now down to 99p and Lan will be pleased to know that they have cut the price on Tofutti cream cheese, now half price.:lol2:
