Can some babies/children with intolerance to dairy be ok on baby formula (regular formula) but have intolerance symptoms only when they have yoghurt, cows milk etc....?
Just be thinking about it and Jem only gets the runs when she has actual dairy products, with formula she gets sick but no upset tum, she seems to be able to tolerate regular formula alot better than she can dairy products, why is this? and does it mean she has a true intolerance or delicate tummy?
If she reacts to dairy products only is there a need to keep her off regular formula and give Pepti formula?

It really sounds like Jem has a problem with dairy products. If she is sick on formula this is a sign that she can't tolerate formula. Please keep her on Pepti. I know how bad I feel when I overdose on lactose. Feeling sick is grim. If she is sick a lot then she will not be getting the nutrients she needs to grow.

If her poos are normal now that you are not giving dairy then it is poss. It would also be another reason for keeping her off dairy if it upset her little body that much.
Hi there
Haylie gets very mucusy poos and vast amounts in her sick, when she has had dairy in any form.
Id agree that it sounds like she is intolerant to dairy, and as formula is made from dairy that is why she is sick.
Try without any at all for a while and see what happens. I agree with the others If nothing else it will give her a break from being sick.
Good luck

Hi,
She is so sick on Pepti & Neocate so im at a loss really, not sure what to do. When she has regular baby formula her poos are fine and she seems less sick but still sick just not as much as on this pepti. Its when she has yoghurts she gets mucusy poos and they are runny, she also seems grumpy.
Is it not possible to give her regular baby formula if she is happy on it but just avoid proper dairy products?
Its so worrying, she isnt gaining on pepti really. She is quite small.

If Jem is sick more on Pepti and Neocate rather than formula which does contain dairy she is reacting rather strangely. I think that this is beyond our scope. Are you the mummy that was told to wean ASAP? Sorry I have to ask as I am losing track. If you are then I guess that who ever told you to do that must think that would be best for her.
If she was just dairy intolerant/allergic then one would expect Pepti or Neocate to be better for her.
If you are really worried about her maybe you could ask your GP to be referred to a consultant.

Thanks Copper,
yes that was me, the dietician said to stick to Pepti and wean her to help her gain weight but add pepti to all her food.
She is very sick on pepti and hates drinking it so im at a loss, its regular formula or nothing i guess.
She can take regular formula quite well, as a baby she screamed in pain and had lots of runny nappies but on regular formula now she doesn't, she is sick but nowhere near as much. I tried her on Cow & Gate Step up formula from 6mths the other day, just one bottle and she took the whole lot and was hardly sick and her poo was well formed but it does contain more iron so it could of been that but surely if it was a problem she would of had runny poo. It just seems to be actual dairy products she reacts to with sick and mucusy poo.
Maybe I should keep a diary and watch her this week.
I am confused.
A diary is a good idea, but you have to remember that 'normal' baby milk IS dairy.
Id steer clear of the yoghurts completely.
ANd definately ask for a referral.

Thanks Yvie,
How come she doesn't have the mucusy poo's and runny poo like she does with dairy when she has 'normal' formula? its so strange and confusing.

Could be the way its processed.
Some people can tolerate various amounts of milk in different forms, cant eat yoghurt, but can eat a biscuit or cake.
Really not sure why she cant tolerate the dairy free formula though. Is she just being a bit sick or hitting the wall every time? Some babies bring up milk anyway, but its when they hit the wall projectile vomit that its not right.

She projectile vomits with regular formula occasionally but with Pepti she is just sick about 5 times after a feed. It might not be alot but looks alot, hehe.
Has reflux been looked into? I don't know that it would cause the mucus but it is often a cause of projectile vomiting. In extreme cases they operate to resolve reflux problems. I don't know much about it but you can probably gather quite a bit of info if you google reflux.
Is she being sick (projectile) before she gets chance to digest the milk? If so I wouldn't have thought it was an intolerance to the milk that is causing the sickiness and gaviscon may help to keep it down (both my boys had to have this on prescription - it a powder that you add to formula and it makes the milk much thicker once it is mixed with saliva/gastric juices).

Hi. When I decided to start my little boy Dylan (now 2) on formula, after initially breastfeeding, he was so ill - throwing up gallons, hives, temperature, etc. The doc suggested soya formula, which at that time I'd obviously never heard of. They gave me it free on presciption. He was absolutely fine on it, so that helped. Have you tried soya formula, yogurts, etc?
well Haylie had really severe constipation for quite a long time so I guess its just whatever is in the product and how they react to it.

Could be the bacteria in the yoghurt?

Hi, thanks all. She can't have soya at the moment incase it triggers another intolerance.
She had 1 bottle of regular formula last night and this morning she had a huge runny nappy with lots of mucus in it so its totally confirmed it now, she hasn't had a mucusy nappy with formula before, usually runny but not mucusy, she has had mucus after yoghurts though. Totally confirmed it all to me now and she was so irratable last night, took a long time to settle to sleep.
Thanks again for your help.

Err I thought you were going to stick to Pepti for a couple of weeks and no dairy. Poor Jem she must have been feeling yukky whilst the formula was going through her system.

Yes we tried one bottle to see how her reaction was, she wasn't in any pain but the poo this morning made me realise her intolerance is bad so deffinatly sticking to pepti now. felt i had to do some kind of test as there is nothing the dietician could do and I was left to work it out myself.

Knowing how ill I feel with dairy I would have gone for the Pepti and dairy free test for a couple of weeks. Still at least you know that Jem can't cope with dairy.

Thats it, I didnt realise dairy caused mucusy poos like that and it smelt vile, poor girl. She is content tonight after a day dairy free:-)
