Hi

Havn't posted for a while - always seem too busy, but reading the threads today reminds me what a help it is to keep up to date so must find more time from now on!

Does anyone know of an alternative ice cream to the First Foods Oat supreme? The main problem is it has to be soya as well as dairy free. First foods have stopped making all of their ice creams at the moment whilst they find a new factory to manufacture it from. I have my doubts it will ever be made again sadly.

Or does anyone have a recipe for making ice cream without soya in as well? My daughter (whos 6) is really missing it.

Finally, shes also getting fed up with all of the cake she always seems to get for pudding. I'm trying to hold off the marzipan at the moment as this will be a treat for easter and am really struggling to find something different for her to eat.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hello everyone! I'm new here. My Dr suggested I might be dairy intollerant in January and although I've seen benefits from not having dairy in my diet, I've found it really difficult to give up milk products entirely - they seem to be hiden everywhere!
I noticed there is a recipe for chocolate and banana ice cream on the back of my soya shake. It's at www.sogood123.com (http://www.sogood123.com) might be worth a try?
Can anyone tell me what do you do about having a dessert when you are eating out? Nearly every restaurant/pub I've been to has plenty of ice cream or custard choices but very few have sorbet. Please help!

Jess - I'm afraid its fruit salad, fruit salad or fruit salad for puddings out. Sorbet often has milk in, for some ridiculous reason (though the Wagamama sorbet doesn't). The other possibilities (if you're lucky) are stewed fruit or summer pudding without the ice-cream or custard eg the Duomo de Bosco (sp?) pudding at Pizza Express.

Bet - sorry, can't help on non-dairy and non-soy, the only one I know is Oat Supreme. It might be worth a google, though. On puddings, have you done fruit crumbles? Or what about jelly for a change, or even trifle made with jelly and then rice/oat milk custard on top? Or (if you have time, or can find a good microwave recipe) how about steamed puddings - I think vegweb.com has some recipes for those plus I just found a selection at http://www.eighth-day.co.uk/recipes/psponge.htm

now this has a couple of recipes using soy milk but i can't see a reason to not change that to rice or some other dairy free milk. several different ideas so give it a go and report back.
several sites suggested you buy icecream maker but as log sa you take it out of the freezer every half hour or so and fork it all all so that it doesn't form a solid lump you should be fine.

Have a look on Goodness Foods Direct to see what desserts they have, they do frozen stuff so might have some alterntives for you. A health food shop might be able to find something for you too, mine has a computer database built into their till for ordering products and can search what is available from wholesalers throughout the country.

There are some rice based desserts available but they are quite expensive - might be worth asking about those.

Try making your own blancmange, custard, rice/cereal desserts using rice milk or oat milk.

Thanks very much for your suggestions and will definately give these a try over the easter hols and let you know the results. My daughter, who is just 6, keeps on at me to try a little bit of soya / milk again to see how she reacts. She hasnt had either for about 2 and a half years now. So have given her a little bit of swedish glaze ice cream tonight to try - fingers crossed we dont get a bad reaction in the middle of the night!

As far as I'm aware, there is no alternative to OAT SUPREME (which will be reintroduced this Spring), not even at GoodnessDirect. Del Monte just introduced new ice lollies, pure fruit juice (Orange/Strawberry/Pineapple) which Eden loves -and so do I. They are prefect for little hands, too. TESCO sells them. Of course, as others have suggested, you could always make your own. I tried it and Eden wouldn't have any of it!

But what about an ICECREAM MAKER? We used to have one back home years ago and I can't see a problem substituting milk with soya milk. Just an idea! ebay and amazon always have deals. Might be a perfect gift for Easter...

Of course I meant substitute it with whatever milk you use at home -not soya milk. I can imagine that almond milk may make lovely ice cream!!!

Gosh, I just had a look: ice cream makers are only around £ 25 new(amazon)!!!! For that price, I may even buy one myself, for Eden!

The problem with all these gadgets is I've got such a tiny kitchen I can't fit anything else in it! When we manage to move I'll be able to have gadgets galore!!!!
If you do decide to order it, or anything else from Amazon, the support group which I help to run can get a percentage from Amazon if people follow the link from our website www.ldmeg.org.uk (http://www.ldmeg.org.uk/) It doesn't cost you anything and we get between 5 and 15% for our funds....Thanks

be careful with sorbet. I assumed sorbet was ice, but in a resturant asked them to check as it looked 'milky' and lo and behold, it was milk based.

matt

yeah i was suggesting the sorbet if you make yourself at home.

though why they would put milk in a sorbet as that makes it icecream. sorbet is frozen fruit juice.!!!:o

A lot of restaurants tell me that their sorbet is just frozen fruit juice. I suppose it might depend what restaurant. Name the restaurant Yvie :)

It was La Tasca. Spanish tapas restaurant in Maidstone, Kent.

I told them the same thing Matt........its not sorbet if its got milk in its ICE CREAM!

They just said 'ug its what we buy in'........

pay peanuts get monkeys. not their fault i suppose as the chances are they have nothing to do with the ordering. miracle they actually bothered to look at the ingredients!

Oh I insisted I see the ingredients for myself, and the manager!

We got all the sweets free of charge as an apology, but I did tell him if my daughter had eaten it and had a reaction, he would be paying a hell of a lot more than puddings as compensation, as I had sat with the waitress and chef and gave them a list of what she can't have and he cooked some food seperately for her, and yes you are right, the sorbet was already made and bought in. Amazing though how people can just 'forget' after a few minutes when it doesn't affect them directly.

Someone else was asking about desserts in resturants? I usually take a piece of fruit for Haylie or a cake or something and just say 'hope its ok to give her this, she has food allergies and can't eat anything on your menu!

Although, at our local resturant on mothers day they cooked her veg seperately as they used butter and I asked if they had a banana or something for her dessert and they made a HUGE bowl of fresh fruit salad for her, so that was really nice.

I shall remember that, there is a La Tasca near me at uni, so I shall avoid the sorbet there!!

I've come across lots of sorbet with milk in (more than without) - if you read the labels of sorbets in the supermarket lots of them do have it, and my local Italian ice-cream shop (which makes its own) adds a bit of milk and tells me its traditional to do so in Italy. Which is irritating.

Wagamama is a notable exception - their sorbet is OK.

Hi, My daughter also has dairy and soya allergies (a complicated combination) but I have recently discovered that Bottle Green who make cordials now produce a sorbet which in the summer berries tastes quite creamy and ice cream like. Also on Goodnessdirect they sell 'Rice & Rice' puddings in both vanilla and chocolate flavour which are milk, soya and gluten free. I hope this helps!

My mother in law bought some swedish glace for our son - we all tried a spoonful and agreed it was lovely, no differnt to normal ice cream - but have all gone back to normal ice cream for now and he gets the 'special' tub agin next time he visits....I am not sure of the ingredients though, is it soya free?

But almond milk ice cream....that could be good, almost worth getting an ice cream maker for. Similarly almond blancmange/creme caramel style puds must be good, and in a rice pudding too!!:eat:

Put the machine on the birthday/christmas list - tell all the family that you need it now now now and that it can be an early gift (and with any luck they'll pull through and have forgotten about it by christmas when you can aske for something else indulgent! )

Have you all tried TOFUTTI VANILLA? I like it much better than Swedish Glace's Vanilla.

Also, Swedish Glace just brought out the dairy- and gluten-free version of Strawberry CORNETTO! Will soon be on sale at Waitrose/Goodnessdirect(online)/Sainsburys. Yummy!

Oh no I just can't bring myself to cross the thresh hold of a Sainsburys store. I could make a detour home one day and visit the one and only Waitrose store in the area. Thanks for telling us about these new ice creams.

wonder how sainsburys can cock this one up? open the packets and replace with real cornettos maybe???

Swedish Glace have brought out some strawberry cornettos and chocolate covered magnum type lollies - sorry, not soya free, but I thought I would mention them as we were on the subject of ice cream.

Nic

Tofutti have done cornettos (strawberry or something else, possibly nut) and magnum type ice-cream lollies for a while - its just a question of finding them.

My latest and best ice-cream find is Soy Delicious magnum style lollies - they are *gorgeous*. But I've e-mailed Soy Delicious because the last three packets I've bought (from two different shops) have been melted and refrozen, which ruins the texture as well as making them very hard to eat (you need a spoon!). But when they've been stored correctly, they're really nice - grab some if you see some.

Here's the website (but it seems that only a few things make it over the Atlantic, so its a bit frustrating reading about all the yummy-sounding stuff that isn't available here):

The Tofutti "Cornetto" is quite nice, chocolate with pecans -of course, completely unsuitable for nut allergy sufferers -as is all Turtle Mountain ice cream! GOODNESSDIRECT has them.

The Swedish Glace choc. lollies are not that new: we've had them in this house well before Eden was diagnosed with a nut allergy -before Nov. 2005. They're okay, actually quite boring....!

Coming to think of it, The TOFUTTI Kids Lollies are very nice, if pricey (big kid in me is talking!) but NOT gluten-free. Holland&Barretts have them.
